The Ridges: Remodeled & Restored

12-5 pm (Tue/Wed/Fri). 12-8 pm (Thu). 1-5 pm (Sat-Sun). The Ridges: Remodeled and Restored, Selection of Architectural Drawings from 1923 – 1951 Dates: April 9 – August 15, 2010 This exhibition features 18 architectural drawings that archive the preservation and maintenance of the Ridges buildings, known as the Athens State Hospital. These highly detailed, hand-drafted plans are documentations of the architectural and engineering design methods used in the first half of the 20th century. Borrowed from the Ohio University planning office, the various technical drawings reveal the intricate craftsmanship, attention to detail and the meticulous process of renovation planning. Specifically, the blueprints in this exhibition depict the improvements to the tuberculosis cottage and infirmary, remodeling of the men’s and women’s ward, exterior painting and repairs of entrance porch of the main administration buildings.

The most unique feature of the Kennedy collection is the series of Navajo sandpainting textiles that Edwin Kennedy commissioned with the assistance of Red Rock Trading Post owners Troy and Edith Kennedy over nearly four decades.

Tue/Wed 12-5 pm. Thu 12-8 pm. Fri 10 am - 5 pm. Sat/Sun 1-5 pm. The most unique feature of the Kennedy collection is the series of Navajo sandpainting textiles that Edwin Kennedy commissioned with the assistance of Red Rock Trading Post owners Troy and Edith Kennedy over nearly four decades. These weavings reflect sandpainting designs used in six traditional ceremonial healing practices: Beautyway, Waterway, Bead Chant, Great Star Chant, Hailway, and Coyoteway. It is, by all accounts, the largest single collection of sandpainting textiles in existence.

Can We Talk Adult Book Discussion

6-8 pm. Please join us for a special visit from local author Wayne Pletcher. We will be discussing his book Campaign of Fear. Wayne Pletcher grew up in southeastern Ohio, and worked as a clerk in the Justice Department during the turbulent 1960s. After graduating college in Ohio, he went on to earn advanced MS and PhD degrees in chemistry at the University of Michigan. Much of his early research refuted popularly accepted standards and rules about common, synthetic organic chemistry reactions. He was hired by the 3M Company, initially working at the laboratory bench where he developed new and patented materials for industry, later becoming technical director of several of 3M’s businesses. Some of his work there required a top secret clearance from the US Government. For several years following this time, he was CEO of Minnesota Technology, Inc. (now Enterprise Minnesota), a non-profit consulting firm. The Campaign of Fear is a state-of-the-art political thriller that will transfix readers with its heart-pounding action.

All Ohio Youth Choir Cardinal Chorale Concert

7:30 pm. A select group of 40 members of the All Ohio Youth Choir from throughout the State of Ohio - the Cardinal Chorale - will present an evening concert at The First Presbyterian Church. This is a first appearance of the Cardinal Chorale in Hocking County. The Cardinal Chorale was organized in 1995 by Charles R. Snyder, who also conducts the group. In the fifteen years it has been traveling, the Chorale has logged an amazing number of miles and concerts. A performance for the Fred Waring Elderhostel Chorus in the summer of 1999 led to an invitation to join alumni of Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians in June, 2000, for an emotional concert at Penn State celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Waring. The group sang by invitation of the Governor for Ohio's September 11 observance at the Statehouse in 2002. The Choir sang at the prestigious Lakeside Concert Series in 2000, 2002, 2005, and 2008. The Chorale's 2010 summer tour will take it to McArthur, Logan, Jamestown, Zanesville, Columbus, Lebanon, Cincinnati, Worthington, and Roscoe Village. An offering to help cover tour expenses will be received. Reception to follow in Westminster House- everyone welcome!

Sky Imagery in Selected Sandpainting Weavings

Can We Talk Adult Book Discussion

6:30-8 pm. We will be discussing the book Mistress Shakespeare by Karen Harper. On November 27, 1582, the Worcester archives show a grant for a marriage license for one Anne Whateley and her groom, Wm Shaxpere. Yet several days later, William Shakespeare married a pregnant Anne Hathaway. Harper's slack latest takes this mystery as its subject, imagining Anne Whateley as Shakespeare's only true love. Friends from childhood driven apart by their families' antipathy, Will and Anne rediscover each other as they come of age, and the young lovers plan to wed in spite of their families' disapproval. When Will is forced into marriage with Anne Hathaway, Anne Whateley flees to London and throws herself into her family's business, but the two reunite when Will arrives in London, and Anne becomes his tireless promoter. The novel's chief pleasures derive from the easy intersection of Shakespeare's work, the history of Elizabethan England and the life that the author imagines Shakespeare might have had. Though the Bard's language infuses the story with life, the emotions underlying the lovers' ruptures and reunions feel repetitive, and because there is never any question about how the romance plays out, the central narrative feels flat. For more information or to register for the "Can We Talk" program please e-mail Linda Parker at lparker@pcdl.org.
