Barbez at ARTS/West

7 pm. THIS SHOW TAKES PLACE AT ARTS/WEST in ATHENS, OHIO! Stuart's Opera House in conjunction with ARTS/West in Athens presents an amazing evening of music with Barbez from New York City! Barbez are unclassifiable icons of the downtown New York scene weaving a haunting mosaic of old-world cabaret, Eastern European folksong, contemporary classical and experimental rock into a uniquely beautiful and personal soundscape. They've worked with artists such as John Zorn, David Byrne, and countless others. Barbez, unclassifiable icons of the downtown New York scene, weave a haunting mosaic of old-world cabaret, Eastern European folksong, contemporary classical and experimental rock into a uniquely beautiful and personal soundscape. With their unconventional lineup mixing a rock rhythm section and theremin, clarinet, and classical percussion, one can hear echoes of such like-minded musical iconoclasts as Kurt Weill, Godspeed, you black emperor! and Russian composer Alfred Schnittke. Over the years Barbez has been privileged to perform with a wide variety of artists including Cat Power, Sun Ra Arkestra, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, MC5, Devendra Banhart, the Dresden Dolls, Faun Fables, and the Angels of Light.

7th Little Cities Appalachian Spring Festival

12-5 pm. Eclipse Company Town. Voices of the Little Cities - 1:15, 2:30, 3:45. The Voices of the of the Little Cities project utilizes the actual words of miners, news reports, coal town women and historians of an earlier era to create theatrical readings, presented by trained actors. These readings, when framed by simple narration and connected together, give an entertaining but factual account of the nationally significant story that took place in the Hocking Valley Coal Fields of southeastern Ohio during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The project is led by Athens theater consultant Kathy Devecka. She describes the theatrical reading process as a “vocal collage” which creates a “voice documentary” that tells the story with the exact words of those who lived out and recorded the events that took place. “Like a quilt, pieces are selected to follow one another within a chronological framework and are based on an idea or theme Voices or intended feeling,” she said. The Voices of the Little Cities project is an outgrowth of several efforts by the Little Cities of Black Diamonds Council to share the provocative story of this micro-region with local citizens, youth and geo-tourists. The project builds upon the success of the Little Cities Living History Characters that have graced Little Cities events during recent years with costumed characterizations of important individuals in the microegion’s history. The project utilizes the research of the past decade around the nationally significant role of the miners and mine owners of the Hocking Valley in the nation’s early labor union movement. The organization’s labor history research was used to launch the Voices of the Little Cities project in August of 2008 during the two-day Agents of Change labor history learning experience. In October of 2008 during the 14th Annual Little Cities of Black Diamonds Day actors read accounts of the region’s labor history as well as those of coal town women collected via research and oral history collection by cultural activist Helen Horn who developed the Athens County Coal Town Women: The Other Half Speaks program during the 1990’s. The project is supported by funds from the Ohio Humanities Council, the Ohio Arts Council and the Little Cities of Black Diamonds Council. Costumes are provided by Constance Gabbard. Bruce & Gay Dalzell - (12:15-1:15 PM) Bruce and Gay Dalzell are no strangers to the region as they have performed at past Appalachian Spring Festivals at the Eclipse Company Town and are treasured performing artist in the Athens area. This husband-wife, singer songwriter prove a vibrant blend of vocal in jazz, blues and folk genres accompanied by Bruce on the acoustic guitar. Celia & Charlie Lewis (1:30-2:30) ....a husband and wife team who serve up an entertaining combination of love songs, bluegrass, folk, country and popular music (often injected (infected?) with a healthy dose of humor) on the guitar, banjo, hammered dulcimer and Celtic harp, along with a strong and pleasing vocal blend." The Boys "O the Hock (4:00-5:00 PM) From Ireland to the Hocking, Athens County own Irish/Celtic band features traditional Celtic music from jigs to jam sessions. this marks the fifth straight year the band has visited Appalachian Spring always a perfect fit for this event and location. Members are Ohio University employees Sean O'Malley, flute: Rusty Smith, guitar: Ed Newman, hammered dulcimer and Tim Hogan, bodhran (Irish Drum). Directions to Eclipse.

12-5 pm (Tue/Wed/Fri). 12-8 pm (Thu). 1-5 pm (Sat-Sun). The Ridges: Remodeled and Restored, Selection of Architectural Drawings from 1923 – 1951 Dates: April 9 – August 15, 2010 This exhibition features 18 architectural drawings that archive the preservation and maintenance of the Ridges buildings, known as the Athens State Hospital. These highly detailed, hand-drafted plans are documentations of the architectural and engineering design methods used in the first half of the 20th century. Borrowed from the Ohio University planning office, the various technical drawings reveal the intricate craftsmanship, attention to detail and the meticulous process of renovation planning. Specifically, the blueprints in this exhibition depict the improvements to the tuberculosis cottage and infirmary, remodeling of the men’s and women’s ward, exterior painting and repairs of entrance porch of the main administration buildings.

Loudon Wainwright III

8 pm. Stuart's Opera House welcomes back acclaimed singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III to Nelsonville! With a career spanning over forty years, Wainwright continues to be a force in the world of music. I was signed to Atlantic Records in 1969. The first album came out in 1970 and the career's been up and down ever since. I suppose if you were writing my obituary today you'd refer to 1972's "Dead Skunk" (#1 in Little Rock Arkansas for six weeks) and my 3 appearances on the M*A*S*H TV show in 1975 as Capt. Calvin Spaulding, the singing surgeon. Hopefully you'd mention my two Grammy nominations for the albums I'm Alright (1985) and More Love Songs (1986). And you'd remember and include the fact that Johnny Cash recorded my song "The Man Who Couldn't Cry" for his highly acclaimed 1994 album American Recordings. Undoubtedly your editor would remind you to say something about last summer's BBC II TV show, Loudon And Co. and the topical songs I've been writing for N.P.R. and Ted Koppel's Nightline on ABC. If and when you do write the obituary I'm sure Virgin Records would be happy to supply you with any photos you might require. You'll probably want to finish off the piece with a quote from one of the fabulous songs which have appeared on the 15 great albums I've made. How about this one from the most recent album Grown Man? "He died on Monday where he lived, it happens to us all Shot through the air expecting nets, flight and then a fall." - Human Cannonball, 1995

Sky Imagery in Selected Sandpainting Weavings

Tue/Wed 12-5 pm. Thu 12-8 pm. Fri 10 am - 5 pm. Sat/Sun 1-5 pm. The most unique feature of the Kennedy collection is the series of Navajo sandpainting textiles that Edwin Kennedy commissioned with the assistance of Red Rock Trading Post owners Troy and Edith Kennedy over nearly four decades. These weavings reflect sandpainting designs used in six traditional ceremonial healing practices: Beautyway, Waterway, Bead Chant, Great Star Chant, Hailway, and Coyoteway. It is, by all accounts, the largest single collection of sandpainting textiles in existence.

Can We Talk Adult Book Discussion

6:30-8 pm. We will be discussing the book "Below the Surface" by Karen Harper. Briana Devon knows her twin sister would never deliberately leave her—but when she emerges from underwater, Daria and their boat have vanished. Fighting rough waves and a fast-approaching storm, Bree doesn't have time to question: if she wants to survive, she has to swim. Exhausted and terrified, Bree barely makes it to a tiny barrier island, where Cole De Roca, who has also taken shelter, revives her. Bound to Cole by the harrowing experience, she turns to him as she struggles to understand what happened to her sister. What was her twin, whom she thought she knew so well, hiding? What really transpired that terrible afternoon? And what secrets lie dormant…below the surface? For more information or to register for the "Can We Talk" program please e-mail Linda Parker at lparker@pcd.org.
