Bela Fleck's Africa Project

7:30 pm Just in case you aren't familiar with Grammy Award winner Bela Fleck, there are some who say he's the premiere banjo player in the world. Others claim that Bela has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the banjo through a remarkable performing and recording career that has taken him all over the musical map and on a range of solo projects and collaborations. If you are familiar with Bela, you know that he just loves to play the banjo, and put it into unique settings. In his most ambitious project to date, renowned musician Bela Fleck explores the origins of the banjo. Fleck discovered in his travels in Africa that, while the banjo is traditionally considered an American instrument, its origins lie far from her shores. In The Africa Project, Fleck brings to the stage his collaborations with some of Africa's most talented musicians.

Luminescent Orchestrii

8:00 pm Romanian gypsy melodies, punk frenzy, salty tangos, hard-rocking klezmer, haunting Balkan harmony, hip-hop beats and Appalachian fiddle, all eaten and spit out by two violins, resophonic guitar, bullhorn harmonica and bass. The members of the Orchestrii come from New York City, yet come together through their love of Balkan and Gypsy music. Sxip Shirey is an international circus composer, Sarah Alden is an old-time fiddle player, Rima Fand is an experimental theater composer, and Benjy Fox-Rosen is a free-jazz bassist. It is not uncommon to see Rima composing music for a Lorca puppet show, Benjy schlepping his bass to a jazz gig, or Sarah fiddling away at some all night old time session.

The Avett Brothers

7:30 pm. Telmpleton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium in Athens, OH. The songs of the Avett Brothers are honest: just chords with real voices singing real melodies. But, the heart and the energy with which they are sung, is really why people are talking, and why so many sing along. They are a reality in a world of entertainment built with smoke and mirrors, and when they play, the common man can break the mirrors and blow the smoke away, so that all that's left behind is the unwavering beauty of the songs. That's the commotion, that's the celebration, and wherever The Avett Brothers are, that's what you'll find. Performing with special guests The Low Anthem.
